Uncertainties are a normal part of life. How do you cope up with them? Here’s a blog that discusses the 3 vital actions you can take today to learn how to embrace uncertainties.
Life is unpredictable.
Thus, it is filled with so much uncertainty. We can only predict the future at a certain point and after that, we just don’t know what the future holds.
For this reason, it is so easy to become doubtful and fearful. We, as humans, crave control. If we are not sure what lies ahead, we lose control and when that happens, we do all sorts of stupid things. Things that could lead to our own destruction.
Perhaps, you are currently starting a business. Maybe, you just finished college. Or you might be starting out your own family.
Whatever situation you might be in, there are things you just don’t know that could or could not happen.
Thankfully, you don’t have to live in fear. You don’t have to worry about the uncertainties of life.
In this post, let me share with you the 3 steps in embracing uncertainties.
1. Recognize and accept life’s uncertainties
The first thing you need to do is recognize that uncertainties are a normal part of life. Thus, it is okay not to know the future.
Once you recognize the fact that there are uncertainties in life, you need to accept it. Accepting this reality means you stop beating up yourself for not knowing everything. Accepting means that you stop worrying and stressing about what might or might not happen.
If you don’t know when the world market crash, then so be it. If you don’t know whether your spouse will still love you 10 to 15 years from now, then so be it. If you don’t know whether World War III would come sooner or later, then so be it.
Don’t get too hung up on things you can’t control. Uncertainties in life are there to make things more interesting for us. In fact, it is in uncertainties that we find new opportunities to grow and develop ourselves!

2. Prepare for life’s uncertainties
Now that you recognized and accepted life uncertainties, you now have to prepare for it.
But how can you prepare if you don’t know what to prepare for?
You start with the things that you know.
Everyone knows that you don’t live forever, that at some point you will get sick and die. You prepare for that. You save up for the rainy days and get life insurance.
Everyone knows that you can’t become successful if you don’t have enough education for your chosen field. You prepare for that by studying. Enroll in a class and be a master of your own craft.
Everyone knows that you will eventually lose the people you love if you don’t invest in those relationships. You prepare for that by ensuring you spend quality time with them. You make it a point to talk to them and be with them.
To prepare for life’s uncertainties means to start doing something about the things that you know. Develop the necessary life skills to help you navigate through life.
3. Learn to predict the future
It is true that we can’t be 100% sure about what the future holds. However, we can still predict it at a certain point.
So, how do you predict the future?
What does this mean? It means that you predict the future by probability. You calculate and turn possibilities by percentage. You try to estimate how much a certain probability would occur in the future.
To improve your probabilistic thinking, you need to learn as much as possible about the future and combine them with your past experiences. This way, you can become a better forecaster.
Now, this could be a huge topic. Annie Duke, a poker champion who became a business consultant wrote a book entitled, “Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don’t Have the Facts.” I don’t endorse gambling, but the book comes with great principles to help improve your probabilistic thinking. You can ignore the betting part of the book and concentrate more on how to predict the immediate and distant future.
To embrace uncertainties in life, you have to recognize and accept this fact.
Start with the things that you know to better prepare for the future.
Finally, learn how to forecast what may and may not happen by gathering as much information as possible.
Change your perspective in life. Instead of dreading uncertainties, embrace them. Whether you like it or not, there will be things you will never know until it happens.
Just do your best in life and let nature take its course.
