The Niagara Syndrome

In the book, Awaken the Giant, Tony Robbins discussed a problem that he would call the Niagara Syndrome. He went on to describe people infected with this “disease” often “go with the flow.” Most often than not, people simply do what is easy and not what is necessary. Thus, they become directed by their environment instead of their own values and decisions.

The result? People lose control over their lives. They remain apathetic and lethargic to the point that they are harshly awakened by the raging water. By the time they realize the pitiful direction they are heading to, they are only a few meters away from the edge and it is almost always too late.

Sadly, these people take a physical fall. Sometimes, an emotional fall or financial fall. It will hit them where it hurts the most.

The power of decisions

Anthony Robbins wrote in his book:

“It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.”

I believe there’s a lot of truth in that statement.

Many years ago, when I was still running a mobile phone business, I have one saleslady who goes to school every Sunday. However, one day, she told me that she quit and will just concentrate on working as a saleslady.

I told her that having a college degree would improve her wage in the future. She would have more job opportunities once she finished schooling.

She simply replied, “It’s tiring to work and study at the same time.”

While I can understand her predicament, I also know that great results demand great effort. That was more than five years ago. From what I know, she still works as a saleslady.

What is the point I’m driving at? It is simply this: your decision today will either improve or worsen your situation in the future.

If my saleslady, years ago, made a decision to finish schooling, she should be working now with a much higher wage. She should be working in a better condition and probably been living her dreams.

As Anthony Robins puts it:

“The difference in the results that people produce comes down to what they’ve done differently from others in the same situations. Different actions produce different results.”

That’s the power of decisions.

As you look back over the last ten years of your life, were there times when a simple but life-changing decision could have made your life extremely better? Were you able to make that decision? If not, would you wish you could have made that decision?

The good thing is that it is never too late. You can still make better decisions and choose to act upon it now.

Decisions are powerful. They can turn the invisible to visible; dreams into reality; problems into opportunities; and sadness to joy.

The good news is that you have this POWER! You already possess this power and all you have to do is harness it. This power is available to the young and old, the rich and poor, male and female.

Commitment is a must

Whatever it is that you want to improve in yourself, you would need to commit to it. If not, then you will only fail over and over again.

There’s a difference between being committed to from being interested in.

Please read that again.

If you are telling yourself, “I’d really like to stay in shape.” “I really would like to be closer to my kids.” “I really would like to stop smoking.”

Now, that’s weak. There’s no power to those statements. Those are mere wish lists.

Change those statements into commitments. Instead, say, “I commit to stay in shape.” I commit to spending more time with my kids.” I commit to stop smoking.”

Did you see the difference?

Unfortunately, most people would rather make excuses rather than commitments.

Excuses won’t make you grow. In fact, they would simply limit your potential and lead you to destructive behaviors.

Today, once you made a decision, why not stick to it? No matter what happens, make that decision to work for you. Don’t let anyone or anything steer you away from what you have already put your mind into. When obstacles riddle your path, you have made a decision that you will find a way and never give up.

See which is working and which is not. When you make a decision and commitment, it doesn’t mean that you have to be rigid. You also need to be flexible and be ready to change your plan when necessary.

When you make a decision, couple it with commitment and action. That’s the only way you can achieve your goals in life!

Don’t fear wrong decisions

One of the greatest reasons people shrivel back to their comfort zone and avoid exploring new opportunities is their fear of committing a mistake.

Here’s what you need to know: mistakes are part of life. Nobody’s perfect. The truth is that extremely successful people today didn’t get where they are right now without committing a mistake.

There’s no doubt; you will make a mistake down the road. So, why not still make a decision to improve your life? If you fail, then you learn something. If you succeed, then congratulations to you.

You will never know the result until you try.

They say, “Repetition is the mother of all skills.” Mastering your craft takes a lot of effort and time. Mastery happens over time and it will not come to you instantly.

Robbins wrote in his book:

“If you’re on the river of life, it’s likely you’re going to hit a few rocks. That’s not being negative; that’s being accurate… remember that there are no failures in life. There are only results.”

How to harness the power of decision?

The first thing you need to do is recognize that decisions are life-changing. It is a power that we must harness to our own advantage. Once you understood that, you need to add commitment to your decision to ensure it would really work for you.

Commitment means taking action. Don’t leave any decision up in the air without taking the first specific step toward its realization.

Finally, don’t be afraid to make decisions because that’s how you will grow. Learn from your mistakes. Stop beating up yourself for the failures that you committed in the past and will commit in the future. Use these mistakes as your stepping stones to success.

Enjoy the struggle. Nothing lasts forever. Life is a cycle of sowing and reaping. Know that at the end of it all, you will come to the point where you can look back and say, “My decisions have all been worth it!”
