17 ways to waste your life

You lie down in your deathbed.

You only hear the melancholic beeping sound of the ventilator.

It’s the only machine that’s keeping you alive.

As weak as you are, you try to open your eyes.

You look around and see no one.

That’s the time when it hit you:

You have wasted your life.

Isn’t it scary to live your life and by the end of it all, you simply wasted everything?

You try to look back and think about where all the years of life went to.

Some were well spent, while the majority is just a complete waste.

No doubt: you and I don’t want to reach the point where we simply waste our life.

Thankfully, it’s not yet too late for many of us.

If you are reading this, I’m sure you are interested in having the best life ever or the best life possible.

So, in this post, let me share with you 17 of the best and scariest ways for you to waste your life.

Point no. 1: Do your best in pleasing everyone

Here’s a fact of life:

You can never please everyone at the same time.

No matter how hard you try, someone will still hate you for doing good. Even having the best intentions won’t save you from displeasing other people.

The sooner you learn and accept this, the better.

So, stop pleasing everyone. You will just waste your time doing so.

Point no. 2: Exclusively chase material wealth

Material wealth gives you happiness and freedom.

However, you need to realize that it shouldn’t be your ultimate goal in life. Material wealth should only be the means to an end but not the end of itself.

A lot of people have wasted their lives reaching the peak of their career. In the end, they find the peak a lonely place. Only then they realized, that worldly success isn’t everything.

Point no. 3: Not doing something greater than yourself

You need to find something that is worth fighting for. Remember, there is more to life than simply just living for yourself. Do something that will last even after you have left this planet.

So, whether it is helping a charity foundation, saving the environment, finding a cure to diseases, preaching the Gospel (if you’re a Christian), or serving your community, do something that is greater than yourself.

Point no. 4: Watching too much TV

On average, a person spends more than 10 years of his/her life watching TV.

Think about that for a second!

Can you imagine wasting a decade of your life simply by watching TV?

Of course, it is not only TV that can waste your life. It could also be playing video games, mindlessly surfing the Internet, and browsing social media all day!

Point no. 5: Doing only the easy things

In this life, you probably have noticed already that those things that have the greatest reward are those things that are difficult to accomplish.

Simply put:

The harder a task to complete, the greater the reward it shall yield.

So, if you will only settle on doing the easy things, you will not learn something significant. It will simply retard your physical, emotional, financial, social, and spiritual growth!

Point no. 6: Complain and whine

What is the best way to waste your life?

Two words:

Complain and whine.

Always see what’s wrong and how life is unfair to you.

That’s an easy way to waste your life.

If you spend so much of your energy complaining about even the smallest things, then you will just end up miserable.

Point no. 7: Letting fear restrict your growth

The number 1 reason people stop going out from their comfort zone is fear.

As a result, they don’t explore other opportunities.

They are too afraid to commit mistakes that they are paralyzed to make a move.

Well, the thing is, life is not perfect.

If we want to grow or improve our lives, we need to take risks.

After all, if you commit a mistake, at least you will learn. If you get it right, then that’s your reward!

Point. No. 8: Comparing yourself to others

Theodore Roosevelt once said:

“Comparison is the thief of Joy.”

There’s a lot of truth in that quote.

If you compare yourself to those who are inferior to you, you get proud.

If you compare yourself to those who are superior to you, you get envious and frustrated.

Either way, you don’t earn anything good.

In fact, no one wins the game of comparison.

Not only that, but people have their own circumstances.

You are simply comparing apples to oranges.

There’s no proper way of comparing yourself to anyone.

Point No. 9: Letting others decide for you

If you don’t decide for yourself, you will eventually be in places you don’t want to.

I remember a friend who let his parents choose which degree he should get in college.

Until now, he wasn’t able to finish college and eventually dropped out.

I also have a friend whose marriage is arranged.

He isn’t happy in his relationship today.

You see, if you let others decide for you, you will live a life that you don’t own.

Of course, it is okay to ask for advice, but in the end, it is you who will make the decision, not others.

Point no. 10: Stop learning new things

Learning is a life-long process.

If you think it stops when you finish college, then you’re wrong.

Whatever age you are in right now, you can still take something and learn from it.

Whether you take an online course or read a book, you need to continue learning if you want to use your life for a better cause.

Point no. 11: Not investing in relationships

When you are about to die, I’m sure you won’t care about the money you have in the bank, the car that you bought, or the house where you live.

What you will care is whether people will care for you or not.

That’s why, in life, the most important things in life are not things at all.

They are the people who make your life worth living for.

Thus, stop chasing the wrong things in life.

Don’t forget to invest in relationships.

Seek out friends, be with your family, connect with your relatives.

Money can’t hug you back.

It is only humans who can give you a warm hug that the soul craves.

Point no. 12: Not taking care of yourself

“Health is wealth.”

If you want to waste your life, simply ignore your health and you will surely die young.

Fill your life with vices and drug addiction.

Eat unhealthy food and live a sedentary life.

You see, it will not only shorten your life, but a sick body will prevent you from enjoying life.

Point no. 13: Be a source of negativity

When people walk away from you, do they feel uplifted or depressed?

Life is what you make it.

If you want to waste it, be a source of negativity.

Have a negative outlook in life and I’m sure, all the days of your life will be dark and drear.

Point no. 14: Not having a goal in life

A goal gives you direction.

It gives you a purpose.

It drives and motivates you.

The worst thing you do is go on with life without a goal.

Not having a clear vision of what you want in life will only make you lazy and unproductive.

A great tragedy is when you die and you didn’t accomplish anything.

Point no. 15: Holding on bitterness and grudges

When you are bitter and always think of getting even, you just lose precious opportunities to stay happy and joyful.

Every minute you spend in bitterness is also a minute you lose being happy instead.

Bitterness is like drinking poison and hoping the other person will die. It will only harm you.

Holding on grudges is also like holding on a lump of hot coal. The longer you hold it; the greater burn it will cause.

Just let go of bitterness and grudges if you want to live a full life.

Do it not for others, but for yourself.

Point no. 16: Breaking the law

When you break the law, you will go to jail and I’m sure, you don’t want to waste your life behind bars.

So many people have been robbed of their life because of doing something wrong and having to pay for it with their time.

So, be a good citizen.

Don’t even think of breaking the law.

Even if you are not caught, you will still live a stressful life running away from the authorities.

Point no. 17: Having a long commute

One estimate explains that on average, US commuters spend 200 hours per year on the road.

Now, that’s a lot of time.

That’s just in the US.

In other countries, traffic can be a lot worse.

When I was in college, I spend 2 hours on the road just to reach school.

If you spend a lot of time commuting, start considering to move closer to your destination or simply change the way you work.

Don’t let traffic jams suck the life out of you.

Final words

These are some of the best ways to waste your life.

Now, I’m not telling you all these to help you waste your life.

But rather, I’m telling you this to serve as a warning.

A lot of us wanted to have an abundant life.

However, not all of us do the necessary things to really achieve that.

It takes any dead fish to go with the flow of the water, but it takes a live fish to swim upstream.

The default of our system is to simply live life as it is with no desire to improve it.

If you decide to do nothing, it will surely lead to a wasted life.

That’s why having a wonderful life needs effort.

You need to make your decision now to stop wasting your life.

By doing so, you will have a better chance of living a productive, blessed, and joyful life!
